Kenny Chesney’s made numerous appearances on “The Tonight Show” over the years, but it’s always been as a singer. The formula changes a little April 15 when Kenny shows up to promote a film. He’ll visit with Jay Leno six days prior to the release of his concert film Kenny Chesney: Summer In 3D.
“It’s sorta strange to be going on ‘The Tonight Show’ with a movie coming out,” Kenny says. “It’s very different, the idea of showing clips and talking about the experience of making this film. But it’s something we’ re all — me, the band, Joe Thomas the director, all the guys who worked on it — are really proud of, and it’s definitely getting me out of my comfort zone.”
Kenny already has a unique relationship with “The Tonight Show.” The late-night format usually has actors and personalities chatting on the couch with Jay Leno with musicians typically relegated to an end-of-show performance and handshakes as the credits roll. But longtime country fans might remember that Kenny was interviewed even before he became a superstar, thanks to one rather odd incident.
Kenny was one of numerous acts on the bill in 2000 for George Strait’s stadium tour, and when the entourage reached Buffalo that June, Kenny went riding off on a policeman’s horse backstage. Kenny thought he’d been given permission to take the ride; the officer thought otherwise. In a weird turn of events, Tim McGraw got in a scuffle with at least one policeman, and both Kenny and Tim were arrested. Both singers were eventually acquitted for what was essentially a miscommunication, but the incident garnered national attention. Kenny actually helped his profile through his willingness to go on TV and take a bit of ribbing.
When he hits “The Tonight Show” this time, Kenny may be going to promote a film, but he’s still planning to do a little music. In contrast to Summer In 3D, which captures his stadium-sized 2009 tour, he’ll be playing with just an acoustic guitar.
“This will be maybe my most intimate performance ever on television, just like the movie is the most in-your-face, in-the-Goodyear Blimp, in-the-Sand Bar, on-the-stage, almost-under-my-hat we could make it,” Kenny says. “Consider the contrasts, and enjoy both phases.”
Kenny’s profile will be rather large in the coming weeks. In addition to the movie and the booking on “The Tonight Show,” he’s also set for an April 9 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” And he’ll be in Las Vegas April 18 for the 45th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, where he’s nominated for three trophies, including Entertainer of the Year.
Kenny Chesney will make an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on April 9. The episode will also feature footage from his surprise visit to Key West, Fla., with a crew from Oprah. His upcoming film, Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3-D, will be released nationwide on April 21. In addition, his next concerts will take place on May 14-15 at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. Although he’s not mounting an extensive tour this summer, Chesney’s performance calendar also includes another pair of Las Vegas dates in July as well as six music festivals. His current single is “Ain’t Back Yet.”
Kenny Chesney will return to East Tennessee on April 14 to attend a special advance screening of his concert film, Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3-D, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper. The event at the Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 theater in Knoxville benefits Variety — The Children’s Charity of East Tennessee in its efforts to assist needy children. Chesney was born in Knoxville and raised in nearby Luttrell, Tenn. His film arrives in theaters throughout the nation on April 21.
BNA/NASHVILLE star KENNY CHESNEY will be featured in ESPN RADIO and ESPN-2 commentators MIKE GREENBERG and MIKE GOLIC’s new book, titled “MIKE & MIKE’s Rules For Sports and Life.” CHESNEY has often been featured on the duo’s show, “MIKE & MIKE In The Morning” and has written the preface to the book, which will hit shelves APRIL 7th.
CHESNEY said of MIKE & MIKE: “They’re a little bit crazy and irreverent, but they know their sports — and from completely unique perspectives — and aren’t afraid to hash it out. To me, it’s a lot like what goes on on my bus when we’re out on the road, except, they’re on ESPN-2 and ESPN radio. So when they asked if I would write something for their book, I was right there. I’d never done anything like that before, but it was honored to be asked.”
Look for CHESNEY to be popping up on the “Mike & Mike in the Morning” show in the coming weeks. For more info, see www.kennychesney.com.
It has been said that Kenny will be taping a new episode of Oprah next Saturday! I don’t know all details about it, but I will let everybody know as soon as I here anything else about it. The airdate of the episode has yet to be released, but I’ll post it if I can find anything about it.
I know I’m really, really late with this, but Kenny has put out a new music video for his new single Ain’t Back Yet. Captures will be in the gallery soon! Check it out:
For much of last year, Kenny Chesney’s touring machine scooped up more money than any other country act. And, it shows as Billboard has put together its list of music’s top 40 money-makers. Billboard says it compiled its list from CD and digital sales, publishing royalties, touring and all forms of streaming.
It’s touring that really brings in the cash. That could be one reason why Kenny Chesney has placed the highest of any country artist on the all-genre money-making list. He’s in ninth place with $26.5 million. Miley Cyrus is 15th with a little more than $21 million. Rascal Flatts is 19th with about $18 million.
Next is Taylor Swift in 21st place with $17 million. Then, two guys who suggest starting a band are next: Brad Paisley in 27th and Keith Urban in 28th. It’s paid off for them. Each made a little more than $14 million last year. And, Toby Keith is in 33rd place. He earned $12 million. For the record, U2 is in first place with a whopping $106.5 million in earnings.
Apparently, Kenny Chesney has been onto this iPhone trend from the get-go. When it was introduced, he bought a bunch of them for his tour staff. Then he started researching the apps (also known as applications, or cool things the iPhone can do in addition to calling, texting and emailing). He found that an artist app was a good way to put songs and tour info into the hands of fans. “With the iPhone’s capability, it’s a great opportunity to let your fans get in there and really experience the music … and the shows … and well, all of it. So, I decided rather than be first, I’d take some time and create something that gives the fans the most comprehensive application we could create,” he said. What does he mean by “most comprehensive”? There’s a No Shoes Radio component that plays even as you move through other functions. There are live cuts, song demos, favorite records and backstage stuff. There’s a store for the music and gear. There are photo galleries, videos and a Twitter function. It allows you to buy tickets and then get GPS directions right to the venue’s parking lot. Chesney said his mission was to “take the things an iPhone can do and let it bring your music alive for the people who love it.” It sounds like mission accomplished.
