Country music is officially one of music’s biggest money-makers. Combing the revenue of tours and album sales from 2000-2009, the LA Times compiled a list of the top ten ‘Ultimate Performers’ of the decade, with three of country’s biggest stars making the grade.
Kenny Chesney comes in at the No.2 slot, directly behind powerhouse vocalist Celine Dion. With an estimated revenue of $742 million, there was just under $8 million separating the country superstar from Celine, who spent five years as the star of one of the highest-grossing Las Vegas shows ever, helping her reach a combined income of $747.9 million. Following Kenny, the Dave Matthews band came in at $737.4 million, with the Beatles at $627.3 million (thanks to tours by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) and U2 at $609.7 million.
Country music showed up again with Toby Keith at No.6 amassing almost $592 million. Bruce Springsteen is right behind him with $588.3 million, followed by the Rolling Stones at $569.6 million. Tim McGraw came in at No. 9 with $550.2 million, thanks to two succesful ‘Soul2Soul’ tours with his wife, Faith Hill, as well as a few solo treks during the decade. Rounding out the top ten is Britney Spears at $494.3 million.
In the list of ‘Ultimate Performers’ for 2009, country music again proved its worth, with Taylor Swift in the No.7 slot, with just over $83 million made in one year, followed by Kenny at No. 8 with $81 million. The year’s top honor went to U2, with an impressive $137 million in revenue for 2009.
Kenny Chesney, who along with Toby had record-breaking tours this past decade, has decided to take time off the road this year, while he works on a new album. Tim is hitting the road for his ‘Southern Voice’ tour, with opening acts Lady Antebellum, Lost Trailers and Love and Theft. Toby, in addition to having a No. 1 album with ‘American Ride’ is also hard at work heading the newly formed Show Dog-Universal South label.
Summer stadium shows by country star Kenny Chesney and hometown hero Kid Rock each grossed more than $3.5 million to top the area charts, according to data released today by Pollstar magazine.
They were among four metro Detroit concerts to rank in Pollstar’s top 200 grosses of the year.
Rock was far and away the top local touring act: His 24-city national tour drew more than 450,000 concertgoers and pulled in $17.1 million.
DTE Energy Music Theatre once again reigned as the country’s top amphitheater, hosting 694,801 attendees. Sister venue the Palace of Auburn Hills ranked No. 22 among the nation’s arenas, while the Fox Theatre was No. 15 on the theaters list and the Fillmore Detroit No. 31 among clubs.
Overall, the North American concert industry enjoyed a strong year despite the sour economy, with ticket revenues up nearly 10% to a record $4.6 billion.
Metro Detroit’s top concert stands in ‘09:
1. Kenny Chesney Aug. 22, Ford Field: $3.8 million, 49,215 attendance
2. Kid Rock July 17-18, Comerica Park: $3.6 million, 74,774
3. Billy Joel-Elton John May 21, the Palace: $2.3 million, 20,827
4. The Eagles March 21, the Palace: $1.9 million, 14,186
Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and Alan Jackson are among the acts appearing at the Houston Rodeo & Livestock Show 2010.
The event starts March 2 and ends March 21. Jackson plays March 2.
Dierks Bentley will play the fest March 3, Kenny Chesney March 4, Jason Aldean March 6, McGraw March 8, Darius Rucker March 9, Rascal Flatts March 10, Brad Paisley March 11, Toby Keith March 12, Blake Shelton March 13, Lady Antebellum March 15, Keith Urban March 16, Gary Allan March 17, Eli Young Band March 19 and Brooks & Dunn March 20.
Country music sensation Kenny Chesney recently purchased a new, lavish home in Nashville at a whopping $9.2 million according to new reports.
Although Kenny’s home base is in the Virgin Islands, the 41-year-old singer needed a place to stay in Tennessee Radar Online reports.
Renee Zellweger’s ex- husband’s lush new Franklin area property boasts five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and even an infinity pool according to Radar Online.
And to top it off, the 11,000 square foot Tuscan designed home is located in the perfect location right next to Music Row and conveniently close by to Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s estate, Radar Online reports.
Marshall Bruce Mathers III, aka Eminem, has easily topped album sales over the last decade with 32.2 million units sold. The Beatles claimed second place with sales of 29.9 million.
Country artists were well represented in the top ten with Tim McGraw finishing third having sold 24.6 million albums. Toby Keith was just behind on 24.4 million and Kenny Chesney sold 21.96 million to finish in sixth place.
Britney Spears finished fifth on 22.9 million and Linkin Park sold 21.4 million to finish seventh. Nelly, Creed, and Jay-Z rounded out the top ten with sales of between 20.3 and 21.2 million albums.
I just added all of Kenny’s Twitter photos to the gallery. I’m also trying to get Kenny’s Tweets to display on the sidebar, but I’m having a little trouble with that right now. I’ll see if I can get it to display correctly. Wish me luck. lol. Enjoy the Twitter photos!
When Kenny Chesney flew into Bardstown-Nelson County Airport in Kentucky with his girlfriend on Dec.18 to buy a couple of MaltiPoo puppies, breeder Cathy Adamson at Puppies Plus didn’t realize she was picking up a country superstar at the airport.
“I didn’t have any idea who he was to start with,” Cathy tells the Kentucky Standard. Apparently Cathy had only been speaking with Kenny’s girlfriend — Miss Tennessee 2008, Amy Colley — and the contract was in her name.
Giving Kenny and Amy the celebrity treatment by picking them up from the airport, the breeder says the singer was wearing a beanie hat, and introduced himself simply as ‘Kenny.’ Cathy recalls the new dog owner as being very down to earth and sweet, as he sat on the couch laughing, letting the puppy crawl up his chest to lick his face.
After spending about a half hour picking out puppies, Kenny and Amy settled on two female teacup MaltiPoos, who only weighed about 23 ounces each. When they’re fully grown, the pups will be about four pounds. Kenny and Amy named them Molly and Dolly.
On the drive back to the airport, the breeder says Kenny e-mailed pictures of the puppies from his iPhone. After Kenny and Amy boarded their jet, the breeder was told upon leaving by a crew member that she’d just sold puppies to Kenny Chesney. Stunned, she went back onboard and said, “Don’t tell me you’re Kenny Chesney.”
I am proud to say that Kenny Source is celebrating it’s 2nd year online! I’m a little late saying this because it was a couple days ago, but I wanted to get the layout up first. So as you can see, we have a new layout to celebrate this wonderful occasion! It was made by the wonderful and very talented Mel over at Turn Back the Sun Designs. Thank you so, so much, Mel! It’s amazing!
I would just like to thank all of you, the visitors, for supporting and visiting the site. Kenny has always been my all time favorite singer and even though I love him and his music so much, I’ve had some hard times running the site and I even came so close as to closing the site. But it’s because of you visitors I didn’t. I want to thank you all for visiting and supporting the site for 2 years! It means so, so, so much to me! And I also want to thank our wonderful host Gertie over at The Fansites Network. This site probably wouldn’t be here without you and I wouldn’t want any other host hosting the site! Thank you, Gertie!
It’s been no surprise that I haven’t been around much updating the site, but celebrating 2 years online has really put me in the mood to update! So as a big thank you to all of you, I’m working on some really, really big surprises for the site. I’m not going to give any hints because it will ruin it all, but I can say that you all won’t be disappointed.
Anyways, again, I want to thank all of you for supporting the site and I hope you all keep coming back! Take care and keep looking out for all of the big surprises I have coming! -Eric
Throughout this year’s college football season ESPN has used a new Kenny Chesney song entitled “This Is Our Time” (previously reported as “This Is Our Moment”).
Chesney was inspired to start writing the song on a cocktail napkin last fall during a dinner in Nashville with play-by-play announcer Brett Musburger, football analyst Kirk Herbstreit and producer Bill Bonnell.
The single is now available for download from iTunes and Amazon MP3 for $1.29.
Also you can listen to the song in its entirety on Kenny’s MySpace.
Messina also noted that both DMB and Chesney have kept their ticket prices low. And Chesney – who even in his forthcoming “off” year is playing a good dozen huge shows – is expected to return in 2011 with an enormous tour.
“It’s something people don’t recognize, except when you tell them they’re not playing next year,” he added. “Then they all say, ‘How can you do that? It’s going to ruin my bottom line!’ I’m not sure what we’ll do next year. Maybe we’ll go sell blood or something.”
Finally, the numbers should also invalidate the argument that the concert business relies solely on headliners from the ’60s and ’70s.
With names like Dave Matthews Band, Chesney and Toby Keith – who established their careers this decade – there’s hope the next decade could produce even more new top names.
