Country superstar Kenny Chesney pulled the U.S. Cellular Coliseum into positive territory in September.
Chesney’s sold-out concert Sept. 17 helped record a nearly $65,000 profit for the Coliseum for the month and helped the year-to-date numbers cross into the black by $3,234, said building operators Central Illinois Arena Management.
The monthly financial report for September was released Thursday by the city of Bloomington.
Chesney’s concert drew 8,256 people to a building that has an average of 7,500 seats.
A tailgate party held prior to the concert drew about 2,500, according to the attendance figures released in the report.
Kenny Chesney and other country stars are getting some pretty unusual autograph requests, but the latest one — a pair of baby shoes — is for a great cause.
The tiny pairs of shoes, up for bid here, have been signed by more than 60 celebrities, including Faith Hill, Jason Aldean, Sugarland and Martina McBride. The auction is part of the Stars for a Wish initiative, a joint effort by pediped and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
All proceeds from the auction will go to Make-A-Wish, which helps grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Other celebrities donating signed shoes to the auction include golfer Tiger Woods and and actress Courteney Cox-Arquette. The baby shoes will be up for bid until Nov. 5.
Each winner will receive his or her pair of shoes in a special keepsake box with an engraved plaque.
It may be a bit too early for the Verizon Wireless BamaJam Music & Arts Festival to announce its complete lineup, but it’s never too early to announce Kenny Chesney will appear.
Like many multi-day music festivals scheduled for 2010, BamaJam is still booking artists, but it recently announced Kenny Chesney will headline this year’s shebang, scheduled for June 3-5 in Enterprise, Alabama.
It’s also not too early to put tickets onsale. BamaJam ducats go up Oct. 30 with 3-day tickets priced at $99 and a 1-day “Flex Ticket” costing $49.
The festival says tickets offered at these “introductory prices” are in limited supply and are expected to sell quickly.
All tickets are general admission. RV and tent campsites will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you know what to do.
Past BamaJam performers include Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Brooks & Dunn, Jamey Johnson and Jason Aldean. For more information, please click here for the BamaJam website.
Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift are making big news by quickly selling out their upcoming tours — but Kenny Chesney’s still at the top of the list for now.
USA Today reported on the strongest tours in the country and found that Kenny is No. 1 in all genres.
“You know,” says Kenny of the honor, “to me, it’s about rocking the fans… and I never want to have a ticket price that keeps the people who buy my records or listen to my songs in their truck from coming out and partying with us. If I can make sure there are always seats people can afford – and even try to keep the best seats where they’re reasonable for what they are – then I feel like I can keep having the party of the summer when I go out. Again, to me, it’s about that moment and having fun with your buddies.
“And when you look at some of the other names on that list, well, I’m blown away… cause those are some great shows, too! I know – I’ve been out to see a few of them when we were off, and to be in company with Elton John – who’s out with Billy Joel –, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen or my friend Dave Matthews, it makes you extra grateful that people chose to make you a part of their summer.”
Billboard’s Touring Editor Ray Waddell noted that for seven straight years, Kenny’s sold above a million tickets sales. Even on his shortest tour to date and charging the lowest ticket prices of any major headliner, he was also the only act on the list to play NFL Stadiums across the nation.
“I don’t think anyone sets up their concert schedule or their ticket prices thinking, ‘I’m gonna be the biggest tour on the road,” Kenny says. “But these are the moments that confirm what I already know: I have the best, wildest, most committed fans any artist could ever hope for. I like to think I live their lives with’em through my songs, and they’ve made my last 8 summers the best of a very, very good life by coming out to the shows they way they do.”
Kenny won’t have a major tour next year, but you can catch the four-time and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year at isolated summer shows here and there. “It wouldn’t be summer for me without the fans,” he states. “It just wouldn’t.”
You can also see him on Nov. 11 at the 43rd Annual CMA Awards, performing with buddy Dave Matthews.
Celebrants jammed the reception hall at ASCAP’s Nashville headquarters Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 21) to see Kenny Chesney and Brett James honored for co-writing Chesney’s latest No. 1 single, “Out Last Night.”
The song was James’ sixth No. 1 and Chesney’s fourth as songwriters. As an artist, it was Chesney’s 19th No. 1.
Connie Bradley, ASCAP’s senior vice president, told the crowd that James’ presence at the ceremony involved some tight scheduling since he had just returned the day before from a six-week tour of Europe.
Bradley further noted that Chesney is now the biggest ticket-seller this century in any genre of music.
Hank Adam Locklin, CMA senior manager of membership and industry relations, presented the two writers plaques from the organization. Noting he had long been impressed by Chesney’s character, he recalled driving the singer to the 2004 CMA Awards Show where he was up for the entertainer of the year award.
When someone asked him if he was going to appear at a press conference if he didn’t win, Locklin said Chesney replied, “Of course, I’ll do press. These are my friends. This is my industry.” He won the award — and four more just like it since.
Troy Tomlinson, who’s been Chesney’s music publisher for 18 years (first at Acuff-Rose, now at Sony ATV), said people constantly ask him what the what’s the best and worst parts about working with Chesney.
He said the best and worst factors are the same: “Getting him to cut his own songs.”
Tomlinson went on to explain that as a publisher, he wants Chesney to record as many of his own songs as he can since that means more income for the publisher — and the songwriter. But he added that he also admires the fact that Chesney routinely submerges his own commercial interest to hold out for the best songs.
Even when Chesney does record one of his own, Tomlinson continued, he’s likely to leave the track off the album in deference to other material and is notoriously resistant to peeling off one of his recorded songs for a single.
“I want to thank Kenny for including me in his ridiculously successful career,” said James after he had expressed gratitude to his wife and kids, who stood nearby as the awards were handed out.
Chesney responded by calling James “one of the world’s greatest songwriters.”
Playing off a phrase in the raucous “Out Last Night,” James presented Chesney a black T-shirt emblazoned with the legend “Brad Pitt’s Brother.” Then he showed another he’d designed for himself that proclaimed, “Brad Pitt’s Other Brother.”
The nominations for this years Billboard Touring Awards have been announced and Kenny is up for another award this year! Kenny is up for the Top Package for his Sun City Carnival Tour that featured Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, and Montgomery Gentry. Kenny won this award last year and with the year he’s had, I’m sure he’ll win it again this year too!
When Kenny Chesney performs at The 43rd Annual CMA Awards on Nov. 11, he’ll share the mic with rock artist Dave Matthews on their new duet, “I’m Alive.” Kenny and Dave recorded the song for Kenny’s Lucky Old Sun album and it’s also the current single from Kenny’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 CD.
“I’m Alive” was originally recorded by Willie Nelson for Willie’s 2008 album, Moment Of Forever (which was produced by Kenny).
Other performers already announced include Jason Aldean, Brooks & Dunn, Billy Currington, Vince Gill and Daughtry, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, George Strait, Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Zac Brown Band.
The 43rd Annual CMA Awards, hosted by Brad and Carrie, airs live from the Sommet Center in Nashville on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Kenny, the four-time and reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year (2004, 2006-2008), is tied with Garth Brooks as the top winner in this category. He has received seven CMA Awards, including Album of the Year in 2004 for When the Sun Goes Down, which he co-produced with Buddy Cannon. This year, he has three nominations: Entertainer, Male Vocalist, and Musical Event with Mac McAnally for “Down the Road.” Kenny has sold more than 25 million albums, achieved 19 No. 1 hits, debuted five albums at No. 1 on the all genre Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, and for the last eight years has sold more than one million concert tickets annually, making him the biggest ticket seller in any genre in this century.
Dave Matthews will be making his debut appearance on the CMA Awards. The singer/songwriter/actor has sold more than 32 million albums as leader of the acclaimed Dave Matthews Band and won three Grammy Awards. Dave Matthews Band’s current album is the Platinum-certified Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart in June. This accomplishment ties them with Metallica as the only bands in chart history to debut five consecutive studio albums at No.1. With over 16 million tickets sold, Dave Matthews Band was named the top-drawing American band in the world by Billboard.
Tickets for the 2009 CMA Awards can be purchased by logging on to www.ticketmaster.com; calling (800) 745-3000; or in person at the Sommet Center box office, 501 Broadway (corner of Fifth Avenue and Broadway, in Nashville).
